New "Lunch With Friends" Program Helps Local Jewish Seniors Connect

Charleston Jewish Family Services (CJFS) launched the Senior Outreach Initiative in the spring of 2016, and became the only direct services agency in greater Charleston providing case management services and community connections for members of the elderly Jewish population. The goal of the Senior Outreach Initiative is to help maintain the independence and dignity of Jewish seniors, establish a relationship and ongoing case management to monitor clients’ physical and emotional welfare, and keep clients connected to Jewish traditions and the Jewish community.

Lunch with Friends is a new program sponsored by Charleston Jewish Federation and Charleston Jewish Family Services. CJFS’ mission is to provide Jewish seniors throughout greater Charleston with social interaction, entertainment, and a nourishing meal in a safe and friendly environment.

Another new senior initiative through CJFS is Friday Kiddush at the Sherman House. This program is available for any Jewish senior who wishes to attend. By making the time and location accessible, Jewish seniors can socialize and participate in Kiddush together and build a sense of community. CJFS will also provide food for seniors during Rosh Hashanah and breaking the fast for Yom Kippur.

If you are interested in volunteering for Lunch with Friends or assisting with Kiddush at the Sherman House, please contact Judy Hinman at JudyH@JewishCharleston.org.
