#LivingIt: A taste of tranquility for Sha'ar HaNegev's families: World ORT

For those who enjoy the quiet life, Kibbutz Kfar Aza should be ideal. Established in August 1951 by immigrants from Egypt and the Moroccan city of Tangiers, it’s a village of some 600 souls nestled among 16,000 acres of cultivated land. But rockets and mortars from its once friendly neighbours in Gaza have shattered the rural idyll forcing the relocation of a third of its population. Among them is teenager Guy Shlomo, a student at the World ORT-affiliated Sha’ar HaNegev High School nearby. 

Now armed with bigger missiles, Hamas forced an early end to a scout trip to the Ben Shemen forest in central Israel where Guy had hoped to spend a tranquil week this month. 

“Around 4pm we heard two sirens and explosions. It was the Iron Dome, and we saw [rockets] being shot down. We were terribly afraid and were directly evacuated from the forest,” he said.
