What Is The Program?
The Israel Education Fellowship program offers Jewish youth of the Charleston area the opportunity to obtain an enhanced education by assisting Jewish teenagers in attending institutionally sponsored educational programs in Israel during high school or college as part of the child's Jewish education. The Fellowship Program is jointly sponsored by the Charleston Jewish Federation, Brith Shalom Beth Israel Congregation, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, and Synagogue Emanu-el. Fellows may enroll in educational programs in Israel from their seventh grade year to age 22.
After making a contribution of $200 in their enrollment year, participating students contribute a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $200 per year to the program. The contribution is matched annually by the Fellow's congregation. Additionally, the Charleston Jewish Federation will match funds contributed by the students at a rate of $2 for every $1. This 2 for 1 match is subject to available funds after the fourth year of the program. At the end of a 7 year enrollment, a Fellow who has made a maximum annual contribution of $200 would have $5,600 available for an approved Israel Program. Funding may be limited by available funds.
Students select Israel programs from among the many offered by local and national Jewish youth organizations such as BBYO Inc., North American Federation of Temple Youth Synagogue (NFTY), United Synagogue Youth (USY), National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY), and all others. All programs must be approved by the Fellowship's management committee. The ability of the Fellowship Program to cover the cost of the Israel program chosen will depend on the actual cost of the Israel program chosen by the Fellow.

Eligibility
Students whose family makes a minimum contribution of $100 to the Charleston Jewish Federation and whose familes are members "in good standing" of participating congregations have two enrollment options. For the maximum, or full enrollment of seven years, children should enroll in third grade. Students may alternately choose to enroll in the seventh grade for an abbreviated three year term.
Students must submit applications to Federation by October 31 together with the initial year's contribution of $200. Fellowship participation may be limited by available funds. In subsequent years, the Fellow's family must make a minimum contribution of $100 and a maximum contribution of $200 to the Fellow's account each year to receive credit for each year of enrollment.
In each year of enrollemnt, the Fellow must attend at least twenty (20) hours of approved study in order to qualify for matching funds. If a Fellow fails to meet this requirement for any given year, no matching funds will be available for that year.
